May is National Bike Month!

I got my newsletter from Adventure Cycling today and found out it's National Bike Month. I had no idea! I've been so busy at work and tired when I get home that I just can't seem to get out there and ride. I know I need to. And I'd feel better, too, I'm sure of that.

Next week is Bike to Work week. I don't have to proctor any tests on Wednesday so I might try riding to work! I've never done it before. I only live 4 miles from the school and I can take short cuts through some neighborhoods so that would keep me out of most of the traffic. The only thing I'm worried about is the ride home in the afternoon. We are getting summer temps now and by 4pm it's freakin' hot outside. I've always wanted to do it, though. I'm going to be thinking positive thoughts and talk myself into it!

Biking is my choice for cardio because walking makes my knees hurt. I guess since my cartilage is shot and, duh, I'm still really big the knees protest! I've always been a slow walker anyway and riding a bike is like flying. I change gears to make pedaling harder or easier depending on how much of a workout I'm aiming for. I ride on the (very flat) streets here in Houston so hills are never an issue.

If you haven't been on a bike lately, get yours out or borrow one and give it a go. There's nothing like a good bike ride to get ya going. It's good for your legs, butt, core, and arms.

Happy pedaling! Take some water with you while your out there riding!

  1. I would love, love streets to ride on that are flat -- no hills. But, I suppose there are always trade offs. The weather here is usually pretty ideal for biking, except when it's raining or smokey from wild fires and 107. That'll be really cool when you bike to work. I've always wanted to do that.

We're thinking seriously about a day trip to Yosemite tomorrow & taking our bikes. The waterfalls are cranking from the recent rain and spring snow melt and it shouldn't be too crowded before the weekend. We'll see...

  2. Bike riding is THE best. I so envy you. The paths they have in my area are usually filled with biking nut jobs who'd rather run you off the path than share it. Enjoy your riding!!

  3. I love riding my bike, but live too far (and with too much traffic) to bike to work. Lee's comment about Yosemite has me thinking about biking there!

  4. I wonder why I'm so unenthusiastic about bike riding? I just really don't like it... It's a good thing we're all different, isn't it?

  5. soooo many people where I live are taking this month to bike to work.
    which I admire.
which terrifies me being on the road as half of them arent used to it and swerve into my lane.

gonna be a slow month of driving for me :)

  8. I'm getting back up on the bike this weekend! Thanks for the reminder. :-) I ordered a bike pedometer off of amazon today and can't wait to use it.

  9. Yes, do it! Sounds like fun. I am yet to find the right bike for me, one of those giant tricycles would be just right, though really, so not cool.

    Enjoy bike month!

  10. I am too afraid to get on the roads anymore around here. But one time several years ago, I had the opportunity to ride on a paved country road with pastures on each side. It was already magical, but as I was 'flying' down a hill, I went right though a swarm of butterflies! I will never never forget that!

    Wishing you butterflies! :-)

  12. I love biking and agree with the part about the knees. If it gets really warm, think about the extra water weight you might shed ;)

    Happy Bike week!

  13. Bike riding is the total best exercise! I also love it because it's so much easier on the knees....the speed....the wind....the scenery! It's all fabulous!
